We like to bring you stories from BetterPoints users who are using the app to make positive changes to their lives and earning rewards. Recently I spoke to Peter who is in ‘The Sutton Plan’ programme.
Here is what he said about discovering BetterPoints and the positive impact it's had on his health and wellbeing:
Big thanks to Peter for sharing this with the BetterPoints community. We are very proud to work for a company that makes such a difference to people's lives through using the app. If anyone else would like to share how BetterPoints has impacted them, please do get in touch via the in app Help section.
It’s so easy to slip into being inactive. When I first retired I had grand schemes to keep me active. I was adamant I wasn’t going to become a couch potato and spend my day watching TV and snacking.
Initially I did well. I caught up on all the jobs around the house that had needed doing and I set myself a target of walking a minimum of one mile per day, or an average of seven miles over the week. I kept a little electronic diary of my progress. But I’m sorry to say my resolve weakened and before too long I was down to less than three miles a week and certainly not going out for a walk more than once or twice a week. Then came BetterPoints.
It’s not easy to explain, but BetterPoints kind of gave me the nudge I needed to get off my posterior and get back into being more active. The challenges to achieve the small (but important) milestones back to getting active gave me encouragement and the points awarded as well as the tickets for the draws are a nice little reward. Also, I feel better knowing I’m doing my little bit to stop us all choking to death on car fumes.
There’s no doubt I had become lazy and was using my car far more than I needed to. It is less than three minutes for me to drive to the supermarket to pick up a couple of bags of shopping. With the encouragement of the Better Points programme I now walk to the supermarket more often and shop more frequently and am therefore getting out regularly. It also came as a bit of a surprise that with all the traffic congestion on the local roads it actually didn’t take much longer to walk.
I’ve really enjoyed getting back into walking, and even walking around town. I’ve discovered roads I didn’t know existed. Also I didn’t realise how many different parks and green spaces Sutton actually has. And that target of seven miles a week? Well, I joined the Better Points scheme only some six weeks ago and I’ve already clocked up a jaw-dropping 83 miles. Did I ever think I could do that? Never in a million years.' - Peter from Sutton
